Minimum standards
Every driver of vehicles of the categories AM, A1, A2, A, B, B+E or G has to meet minimum medical standards, whether he is learning, taking a test or holder of a driving licence.
Step 1: after having passed your theory test
Unless you are already a holder of a (provisional) driving licence, you have to pass a reading test in front of the examiner or an employee of the examination centre. If you fail the reading test, you should have an examination by an ophthalmologist of your choice so that he can issue a certificate (in line with the model specified in the Annex 5-2 of the Royal Decree of 23 March 1998).
Step 2: during the application for a provisional driving licence or, failing that, during your practical test
You have to sign a statement of capability (on your honour) whereby you attest that, to your knowledge, you are not affected by one of the physical deficiencies or ailments here specified (Annex 6 of the Royal Decree of 23 March 1998). This statement (*) includes a section on the general physical and psychological aptitudes and a section on the visual acuity. This statement appears on the back of the application for a provisional driving licence or on a document attached to the pass certificate from your theory test.
Read carefully the minimum standards regarding the physical and psychological aptitudes to drive a motor-driven vehicle.
(*) You cannot sign the statement? You have to see a physician of your choice and provide the required certificates.
Every driver of vehicles of the categories C1, C, C1 + E, C + E, D1, D, D1 + E or D + E has to pass a medical examination, whether he is learning or holder of a driving licence.
The examination takes place in 2 stages:
1) an eye test by the ophthalmologist of your choice,
2) a medical test by a physician approved by a medical centre of the State medical-social Office or approved by an occupational health service.
