Oldtimer

#Periodic inspection

Since 1 January 2019, classic vehicles registered in Wallonia as “old-timers” have been required to undergo regular inspection.

Which vehicles does this apply to?

Vehicles which have been on the road for over 25 years can be registered as old-timers.

In order to be (re)registered under the special old-timer’ “O” plate, a vehicle must undergo an initial inspection and a registration application will then be issued if no defect giving rise to representation is found.

Depending on the vehicle’s age, a periodic (annual or bi-annual) inspection is now also compulsory.

When the vehicle is more than 50 years old, it is not subject to technical inspection anymore.

Limited usage?

Old-timer vehicles can now be used for any purpose excluding:

• Commercial and professional usage;
• Commuting;
• Both paid transportation and also free transportation similar to the paid transportation of persons;
• Use as a machine or tool, or for call-out activities.

When?

Depending on your “O”-registered vehicle’s age, a technical inspection may be required as follows:

Vehicles which are between 25 and 30 years old: subject to a regular old-timer inspection.

Vehicles which are between 30 and 50 years old: subject to a regular old-timer inspection every 2 years.

Vehicles which are between 30 and 50 years old and are of an historic nature: When their historic nature is recognised, these vehicles are not subject to periodic inspection anymore (subject solely to the initial inspection prior to use on the road under a new registration plate).

Vehicles which are over 50 years old: When these vehicles are more than 50 years old, they are not subject to periodic inspection anymore (subject solely to the initial inspection prior to use on the road under a new registration plate).

Is your vehicle more than 25 years old and already “O” plate-registered? A transitional period is applicable to such cases. You will need to present your vehicle for inspection within 3 years, so by 19.05.2021 at the latest.

The inspection process covers all of the vehicle’s mechanisms but is carried out in accordance with the standards which were applicable at the time of its first registration and use on the road.

Historic character

For vehicles aged between 30 and 50 years old, it’s now possible to have their historic nature officially recognised. A vehicle is considered to be of historic interest if it meets the following 3 conditions:

1. It was manufactured or first used on the road at least thirty years ago.
2. Its type is no longer produced.
3. It is preserved from a historical perspective and maintained in its original state, and no essential modifications have been made to the technical characteristics of its main components.

This recognition may be granted solely at the request of the client. It always requires to make a full inspection of the vehicle and the responsible of the inspection centre to compile a specific dossier. Depending on the situation, the historic character can be directly granted of directly refused. In case of doubt, the dossier will be transferred to our supervisory authority for analysis and decision. All documentation relevant to the model/type of the vehicle is an undeniable advantage.

FEES:

A fee of €81,40 is applied to build the abovementioned dossier. If the vehicle is found to be of a historic nature, an extra fee of €27 will be charged.

Documents issued

Upon completion of a periodic inspection, you will receive the following documents:

The technical inspection certificate corresponding to the vehicle’s condition at the time of its attendance.

At the client’s request:

• A registration request with a view to obtaining an “O” plate

• An indication on the technical inspection sheet referring to the attribution of historical character:
– OLD-TIMER: Vehicle with historic character
– OLD-TIMER: Historic character NOT granted
– OLD-TIMER: In examination of historic character.

•Solely for old-timer vehicles not subject to the periodic inspection, an indication limiting the validity of the technical control certificate to 2 years (permitting circulation in certain foreign countries for example).

#Inspection of foreign veteran vehicles

If you wish to register a vehicle from another country as an old-timer, you need to be in possession of an original foreign registration certificate. We advise you to visit a customs office first.

You then need to present your vehicle for an inspection. After a favourable inspection, you will be issued with an old-timer vehicle registration application. In order to request new plates from the DIV, this application must be signed and validated by your insurer.
