Category B Licence
The holder of a driving licence valid for category B, which does not have the code 96, may drive a combination made up of a category B vehicle and a trailer whose maximum authorised mass does not exceed 750 kg.
If the maximum authorised mass of the trailer exceeds 750 kg, a category B licence is sufficient, subject to the maximum authorised mass of the combination not exceeding 3,500 kg.
Category B Licence + code 96
The holder of a driving licence valid for category B, which does have the code 96 (after passing tests) may drive a combination made up of a category B vehicle and a trailer whose maximum authorised mass does not exceed 750 kg, subject to the maximum authorised mass of this combination not exceeding 4,250 kg.
- If the maximum authorised mass of the combination (vehicle + trailer) exceeds 4,250 kg, a category B+E driving licence is required.
- If the maximum authorised mass of the trailer exceeds 3,500 kg, a category C1+E driving licence is required.
Category B+E Licence
The holder of a category B + E driving licence may drive a combination made up of a category B towing vehicle and a trailer (or semi-trailer) whose maximum authorised mass does not exceed 3,500 kg.

- If the maximum authorised mass of the trailer exceeds 3,500 kg, a category C1+E driving licence is required.

- From 01/05/2013, the holder of a category B + E driving licence:
- May drive a combination made up of a category B towing vehicle and a trailer (or semi-trailer) whose maximum authorised mass does not exceed 3,500 kg, on condition that the maximum authorised mass of the combination does not exceed 7,000 kg.

- The holder of a category B + E driving licence issued before 01/05/2013:
- May drive a combination made up of a category B towing vehicle and a trailer (or semi-trailer) whose maximum authorised mass does not exceed 3,500 kg, on condition that the maximum authorised mass of the combination does not exceed 12,000 kg.

Category C1+E Licence
If you wish to tow a trailer whose maximum authorised mass exceeds 3,500 kg, a category C1+E driving licence is required.
Theory test
You are exempt from taking the theory test.
Practical test
Practical driver training must be carried out with a view to obtaining a category B + code 96 or BE driving licence. You will have the choice between practical driver training at an accredited driving school and driver training undertaken privately, covered by a provisional licence, which you can obtain from your local council on presentation of your valid category B driving licence.

If you are missing any documents, the test will not take place and you will automatically be charged an administrative fee of € 28.
Identity card out of date? The test will take place on condition that if you have the out-of-date identity card with you and can present a receipt issued by your local council offices proving you have applied for renewal. The application for a provisional driving licence and/or full driving licence will be retained in the database at the examination centre and will only be issued on presentation of a valid identity card. Without the receipt, the test will not take place.
